Man Dies While Swimming With Relatives In Wilmington Lake

WILMINGTON, MA (WBZ-AM) -- A young man is dead in a possible drowning, after crews pulled him from the waters of a Wilmington lake.

Middlesex County DA Marian Ryan says state and local rescue crews were called to Silver Lake around 5:30 Wednesday afternoon. The DA's office says the 19-year-old male was swimming with relatives when he went underwater and didn't come back up.

Officials say good samaritans on the beach tried to save the man, to no avail.

Eyewitness Tim Maclean tells WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Laurie Kirby the crews were able to eventually pull the swimmer from the water. Officials say first responders tried to revive him and brought him to Winchester Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The DA's office says foul play is not suspected, and the medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Maclean says a firefighter was overcome with heat exhaustion and was also transported from the scene. He describes the rescue effort as "very dramatic". Maclean says bystanders lined the shores of Silver Lake, holding one another, as the rescue took place.
