Meet William G. Gross, the new, 42nd Commissioner of the Boston Police Department. After former Commissioner, William Evans hung up the towel, Gross was the next in line and chosen to be his successor. Gross has been serving on the Boston Police for more than 30 years and his last position was serving under Evans as the superintendent-in-chief for about 5 years.
This is a historic day for Boston and the department as a whole. Gross is the first American American to lead the department. He will be leading a department of 2,200 police officers. Mayor Walsh was in attendance as the person to swear-in Gross into office. The swearing-in took place at The Morning Star Baptist Church in Mattapan, MA. This church holds a special place in the Gross family, as William's mother, Deanna has been an active member for around 35 years.
Walsh made some encouraging remarks when he was swearing-in Gross, “right person, right now, to be Boston’s 42nd police commissioner. He is America’s next great police commissioner.”
William G. Gross was sworn in about 12:20PM yesterday, August 6th, 2018. He was accompanied by the sounds of bagpipes at the start of the ceremony from the police department's Gaelic column.
