Gov. Baker wants a Newton judge suspended amid probe

Gov. Charlie Baker said he wants Newton judge suspended while a federal grand jury investigates whether court personnel helped an illegal immigrant escape from federal officials.

"I don't believe she should be hearing criminal cases until that federal case is resolved," Baker told reporters at the State House, the Globe reported. "Look, judges are not supposed to be in the business of obstructing justice."

The U.S. Attorney's office is investigating whether state district court Judge Shelley M. Joseph and court employees released a defendant through the back door to purposely allow him to avoid being detained by ICE agents.
