Suffolk DA defends criminal illegal aliens
By Jeffrey T. Kuhner
Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins has filed a lawsuit against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Her goal: To prevent ICE agents from arresting in state courthouses the most dangerous criminal illegal immigrants—including murderers, rapists and violent gang bangers.
Rollins has been joined in the lawsuit by Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan. Both leftists argue that ICE should be blocked from using Massachusetts courthouses to arrest and deport criminal illegal aliens. They say this is because ICE officials “frighten” illegal immigrants from appearing in court as victims, witnesses and defendants, thereby undermining our justice system.
Nonsense. ICE agents do not enter courthouses looking to simply detain and deport those who are here illegally or have overstayed their visas; rather, their target is to apprehend illegal aliens who have committed heinous crimes—those who pose a serious threat to public safety.
Ironically, the very day Rollins launched her lawsuit ICE officials arrested two individuals in Suffolk County courthouses. Both of them were gang members. One was Elmer Hernandez-Montes, a citizen of El Salvador, who was taken into custody at Chelsea District Court. He illegally re-entered the United States after having been deported three times. Hernandez-Montes was arrested for drinking alcohol in public, and has been arraigned eight times for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, breaking and entering and trespassing. More importantly, he is a member of the infamous 18th Street gang—a group of murderous thugs, who prey upon innocent citizens. If ICE had not arrested him, this career criminal would be out on the streets wreaking havoc.
The same goes for Jose Hernandez Rodriguez, another illegal immigrant from El Salvador, who was taken into ICE custody at East Boston District Court. Rodriguez was arrested for unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon. He is a member of the most ruthless gang in the world—MS-13. He has no business being on the streets or in our country. Yet, if not for ICE, he would be.
The problem, however, is that Rollins has told her prosecutors to alert her office to when ICE officials appear in courthouses. She has also ordered that charges against criminal illegal immigrants be reduced in order to prevent them from being deported. Rollins is not only openly defying federal immigration law, but coddling and appeasing the most violent elements in our society. This liberal sickness of being pro-criminal and pro-illegal alien is spreading like a cancer.
It is the reason U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling decided to press charges against Newton Judge Shelley Joseph. She allegedly helped an illegal immigrant, Jose Medina-Perez, a known heroin and cocaine dealer who has an outstanding warrant for drunk driving in Pennsylvania, get away from ICE agents by escaping through the court room’s back door. Medina-Perez is still on the loose, presumably continuing to deal the deadly drugs that last year alone killed over 72,000 Americans—many of them teenagers and children.
Rollins’ response was fire and fury. She supports Judge Joseph and vows to block ICE from going after criminal illegal aliens, such as Medina-Perez. When asked if she fears being arrested for obstructing ICE, Rollins said, “it would be my honor” to go to jail for her role in resisting federal immigration officers. Think about this: We have a DA who is practically publicly begging to be arrested in order to side with law-breaking foreigners and gang bangers.
President Trump has finally weighed in. In a recent interview with Boston Herald radio, Trump blasted Rollins (and Ryan) for supporting the efforts of criminal illegal migrants to evade ICE officers in courthouses.
“These are people that probably don’t mind crime, they don’t mind what’s going on,” he said. “You look at MS-13, they say in the world there’s nothing more evil. These are some very, very bad people. To try and protect them? I don’t think so.”
Trump is right. Rollins is a disgrace to her office, to the innocent, law-abiding citizens she is sworn to defend and to our state. She has violated her oath, abused her powers and is subverting the rule of law. In fact, she is flouting federal immigration laws. She is engaging in criminal, illegal behavior. No wonder Rollins sympathizes and sides with criminals; she’s one of them.
Yet, Trump must do more than talk a good game. He and his Justice Department need to act. Rollins says she would be honored to get arrested. It’s time the feds obliged her. Lock her up.
