The Washington Redskins retire their name and logo

After a thorough review of the team's name and logo that depicts a Native American, the NFL football team, the Washington Redskins has made the decision today to retire it's name and logo. The team initially announced earlier in the month on July 3rd that they would be conducting a thorough review of the team's name after numerous outcries for the team to do so in this societal climate of social change. The former Redskins have not come up with a new name or logo as of yet but in their statement (that was released today), they did say Dan Snyder and Coach Rivera are working on developing a new name and design that will appropriately reflect what the team stands for.

This is the statement the former Washington Redskins released today:

With this announcement, do you think it's been a longtime coming? If I were asking that question to VB, he would say yes! He was actually ahead of the game (no pun intended) saying their name should be changed a long time ago. It took this new resurgence in social change for the name change to come about. We are in a time in history where society is revamping their logos, names, and product imagery away from something that is no longer culturally relevant or what they believe is appropriate. I try to take these things by a case by case basis. I think this was also a longtime coming and for the best. Now, I also am not emotionally attached to this team and it makes no difference to me if they change it or not so I would really like to hear from the Washington fans as a whole on this one, especially those fans that have been die hard fans for years. Do they recognize it's time for a change or are they holding onto what was? Overall, I think we as a species do not like change, generally. It's uncomfortable and we hold onto what was familiar because with change comes the unknown and with that, fear, so people tend to hold onto what they know and are reluctant to change even when they know deep down it is the right thing to do. In this case, and actually with most, change is happening whether we like it or not, and while we need to accept that, we also need to stay diligent because while some change is necessary and good, other change is not.
