BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick announced this week that he's jumping into the 2020 presidential race. One person he can count on for support is his former Lieutenant Governor, Tim Murray.

WBZ NewsRadio's Ben Parker talked to Murray Thursday, not long after Murray spoke to Patrick himself about his decision.

"Having worked closely with him during two election cycles, and for almost seven years as Lieutenant Governor, I got the chance to witness first hand him at work in moments of crisis, like the Marathon bombing or the Springfield tornado, and watched him make decisions and actions that I think showed leadership at its best," Murray said. "I think he brings a great record and great voice to this campaign as people weight their choices."

On Thursday, Patrick filed to get his name on the ballot in the New Hampshire Democratic Primary.

Murray said he has a job he loves, but looks forward to volunteering for Patrick on the weekends.

He's not worried about Patrick being a bit late to join the race.

"Clearly, he’s organizationally behind than maybe some of the other candidates, but he’s been an underdog before, and it’s not a position he’s afraid to be in when he starts out," Murray said.
