Former Red Sox Manager John McNamara Dies At 88

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Former Red Sox manager John McNamara has died at the age of 88.

McNamara was at the helm of the Red Sox in 1986, which is considered to be an infamous moment in the team's history. McNamara's wife, Ellen, told the Boston Globe's Dan Shaughnessy that "Game 6 is always going to be hanging over him."

Game 6 of the 1986 World Series is where the Red Sox spiraled and lost. Many believe it all started when former Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens was pulled from the game, with McNamara claiming Clemens wanted to be taken out. That is a claim Clemens denies.

Ellen went on to tell The Globe's Shaughnessy that her husband "did not take Roger Clemens out of that game," and that it "tore John up that the press believed Clemens. John would not make something like that up."

McNamara was fired from the Red Sox during the 1988 season.
