Massachusetts' Positive COVID-Test Rate On The Rise

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported another 353 confirmed cases of COVID-19, and an additional 65 probable cases of the virus on Sunday.

The DPH has reported a total of 110,430 confirmed cases, and 8,028 probable cases of COVID-19 in the Commonwealth so far. There have been more than 8,600 total deaths in COVID-cases in Massachusetts since the pandemic began.

According to the DPH, the seven-day weighted average rate of positive tests in the state has been on the rise over the past few weeks, from a low of 1.7 percent to 2.2 percent on Sunday.

On Friday, Gov. Baker said that increase has been partially linked to "disturbing reports" of large private gatherings, where people are not wearing face coverings or socially distancing.

"Unfortunately, these gatherings are resulting in new COVID-case clusters, and ramping up the spread of the virus," said Baker. "These lapses in judgements ... are contributing to a slight but important rise in positive cases in Massachusetts."

Ten days after the nation surpassed four million cases, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention had confirmed nearly 4.75 million cases, and more than 156,000 deaths had been attributed to COVID-19.
