BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — On the morning of September 10, 1994, Boston Police were left wondering what happened. The night before, the band Green Day had history, but for all the wrong reasons.
Twenty-five years ago, on September 9, 1994, a free Green Day concert was held at the Hatch Shell in Boston.
The band was topping the Billboard Alternative Rock charts at the time. Around 65,000 people had come to hear them play.
Just a few songs into their set, a most pit was raging, barricades were stormed, and concertgoers began taunting police — even throwing bottles at them. Fifty people were arrested at the concert.
The mayor of Boston at the time, the late Tom Menino, was not happy.
“I think we should have had better information on what type of event we would have at the Hatch Shell,” Menino said.
Green Day would go on to become one of the most successful punk rock bands of all time.
