Mayor Bill de Blasio doesn’t care about your children’s safety. In the wake of the deadly Parkland school shooting on Valentine’s Day, the New York City mayor has removed all armed police officers from public schools.
The remaining NYPD officer assigned to New York’s public schools has been pulled out, even though there are growing demands for securing school safety. Sgt. Raul Espinet was the last officer to be removed from Francis Lewis High School in Fresh Meadows, Queens, where he’s worked for 12 years. He has been re-assigned.
As the New York Post reports, “Espinet’s position was eliminated because cops in Mayor de Blasio’s new community policing units will visit schools while patrolling the neighborhood, according to the NYPD. School safety agents are stationed at all schools, but are not armed.”
Mayor de Blasio is a genius! Let’s remove armed officers and replace them with unarmed officers. That will scare away a potential mass murderer!
Parents are outraged. They have every right to be upset and question the actions of Mayor de Blasio and the NYPD, especially after 17 innocent students and teachers were gunned down a month ago. A PTA petition was launched last week, where they are asking the NYPD to bring back an armed police officer to Francis Lewis, where 4,400 students attend. The petition has received more than 1,000 signatures in the first two days.
Co-president of the PTA, Linda Lovett, spoke with the Post. She called the decision “ridiculous.” And she’s right. She also said, “All over the country they are telling you ‘arm the teachers, get an officer in your school.’ New York City had a designated officer and they are actually cutting the program. . . they are making us less secure.”
She added: “You are talking about 5,000 people in a one-block radius, and you’re telling me you can’t designate one officer?”
To her point, Staten Island City Councilmen Steven Matteo and Joe Borelli have asked Mayor de Blasio for armed officers in all city schools. De Blasio says it will cost too much. Apparently, Mayor de Blasio would rather cost your child his or her life than have armed police in all schools.
Teachers say without Sgt. Espinet something is missing. Social studies teacher Al Lahood told the Post: “He was as much of a social worker as a police officer, he was part of the school community. Without him, there’s a vacuum, a piece that’s missing.”
This decision is very dangerous. It’s advertising that NYC schools are gun free zones. Who will protect the children? Since the deadly Parkland shooting, there has been an online threat against Francis Lewis high. Considering the online threat, parents and students are very worried about their security.
Let’s face it: de Blasio is a hypocrite—a typical limousine liberal. He will still be protected by armed security but our children won’t be.
There are many ways to protect students from madmen storming into a school and taking innocent lives. Having armed police officers is the perfect scenario. Unless, of course, they are Scot Peterson and the Broward Cowards. Most armed officers would be there to engage the shooter and stop the threat before anyone can get hurt or killed.
As NRA President Wayne LaPierre said at CPAC, “Our jewelry stores, all over our country are more protected than our children. Our banks, our airports, our NBA games, our NFL games, our office buildings, our movie stars, our politicians—they’re all more protected than our children at school.”
LaPierre ended his speech by saying, “The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” He’s correct. Yet, now that’s been taken away from students in NYC.
If a school shooting happens in New York, Mayor de Blasio will be to blame. And he will have blood on his hands.
