Two Woburn Residents Die From Coronavirus

WOBURN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Two women from Woburn are among the state's 44 coronavirus-related deaths, the city's mayor announced on Saturday.

"I regret to share that two Woburn residents have died as a result of their contracting COVID-19, the illness associated with the novel coronavirus," said Mayor Scott Galvin in a press release. "An 89-year-old resident passed away last night and a 92-year-old resident passed away this morning. Both were beloved mothers and grandmothers and will be deeply missed by their families."

Galvin's announcement came shortly after the state Department of Public Health released the daily update on coronavirus numbers in Massachusetts.

As of Saturday, there are 4,257 people with confirmed cases of COVID-19, more than half of whom are under the age of 50. However, the vast majority of people who have died from the virus have been over the age of 60 with underlying health conditions.

Mayor Galvin stressed that people of all ages can both catch and pass along the virus, which might be fatal for others.

"I encourage all residents to aggressively practice proper personal hygiene and social distancing," Galvin said. "I also ask parents to ensure their children and teenagers understand the critical importance of these precautionary measures."
