(National Weather Service)

BOSTON, MA (WBZ NewsRadio) -- Winter weather is right at our doorstep. The first snowfall of the season is predicted to arrive Thursday evening, bringing a mix of rain and snow across New England.

The National Weather Service said snow was expected to transition to rain overnight, bringing the threat of flooding along rivers and in urban areas. They have issued a winter weather advisory from 7 p.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. Friday for all of Massachusetts except the Cape and Islands, where a Wind Advisory was issued.

Snow was expected to begin falling in the Boston area around 7-8 p.m.

Snowfall amounts were forecast in the area of 3-6 inches across Massachusetts, with lesser precipitation near the coast. Boston was expected to get 1-2 inches.

Wind gusts of up to 40-50 mph along the coast and on the Cape and Islands were possible early Friday.

NWS says that commuters should plan on slippery roads, as the hazardous conditions could impact during the evening commute Thursday and the morning commute Friday morning.
