House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is cheering introduction of a sweeping immigration reform bill.
The Democratic measure has President Biden's stamp on it. Pelosi said the U.S. is a nation of immigrants and argued they help "make America more American."
Biden laid out a series of immigration priorities when he took office last month. The heart of the legislation is an eight-year path to citizenship for the roughly 11-million illegal immigrants in the U.S.
It would put a preference on Dreamers, who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.
Comprehensive immigration reform has been an elusive target in Congress for many years.
The late Arizona Republican Senator John McCain led efforts to pass a bipartisan immigration bill in the Senate in 2013, but it went nowhere in the House.
Republican leaders in the House refused to take it up, so the Senate-passed bill died.
