Two middle school students are being hailed as heroes after they took control of their school bus and drove it safely to stop after the bus driver suffered a medical emergency. According to Fox 7, one student jumped into the lap of the driver and started guiding the bus to safety, while the other helped calm the terrified students sitting in the back of the bus.
The two students noticed something was wrong when the bus missed a turn and ended up in a ditch.
He missed a turn and went into a ditch. Then he had to back up, that's when I started thinking. Then he started making circles and stuff. He was going off into a ditch on almost every turn.
Karson Vega called 911, and sophomore Kyler Buzcek helped comfort the scared students in the back of the bus. Vega handed over the phone to Buzcek and then jumped onto the lap of the bus driver and grabbed the wheel. He managed to drive the bus for two miles before bringing it safely to a stop near a bridge over the Colorado River.
We would've all died. Because he was swerving off pretty much into the river and off that hill too.
Karson said he does not take the bus home on a regular basis, but happened to be onboard because his mother could not pick him up after school. His mother thinks it was more than just a coincidence he took the bus home that day.
There was a reason he was on that bus that day.
The bus driver was taken to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Authorities did not say what caused him to start driving erratically.
