Academy Awards President Facing Sexual Harassment Allegations

The president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, John Bailey, is under investigation for allegations of sexual harassment.

According to Variety, the Academy received three harassment complaints on Wednesday and they immediately opened a probe. In a statement released on Friday, the Academy declined to comment on the allegations, citing confidentiality issues.

"The Academy treats any complaints confidentially to protect all parties. The Membership Committee reviews all complaints brought against Academy members according to our Standards of Conduct process, and after completing reviews, reports to the Board of Governors. We will not comment further on such matters until the full review is completed," the statement read.

The 75-year-old Bailey was elected to a four-year-term as president back in August to replace Cheryl Boone Isaacs. Bailey was a cinematographer and sometimes director with nearly 90 films on his IMDB credits.

No details about the allegations have been released.

The Academy launched its investigation amid the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements against powerful men in Hollywood who abuse their power through sexual harassment and inequality. Last year, producer Harvey Weinstein was removed from the Academy after several sexual harassment and assault allegations were revealed.

The Academy established a code of conduct for its members back in December that provides for discipline or expulsion for abuse, harassment or discrimination. A claims process is also available for victims which sets rules on how allegations would be investigated and judged.
