VB's Column: "A Romney By Any Other Name..."

Now this one's just plain weird...

This was the week we found out that Mitt Romney, the former Governor of the Commonwealth, has a burner Twitter account, (ever the hip cat, Romney referred to it as a "lurker" account, oddly making it seem much more creepy!) and the name he uses for the account is "Pierre Delecto." Let that sink in for a second; Mitt Romney has created an alter ego for himself, and he has named it "Pierre Delecto." I know what you're thinking, because I was thinking the same thing: this has to be a first for Congress. But then the name "Carlos Danger" popped up. And, lest we forget, President Trump, before he got into politics, used to call gossip columnists pretending to be "John Barron", press agent for Mr. Trump. Ironically, Trump's nom-de-plume is the least "porn name" of the three.

But back to Pierre Delecto. What is going on with Mitt Romney? Ever since he got to the Senate, he's been nothing short of a weirdo. First, after getting a birthday cake from his staff this year, he took the lit candles off and blew them out one by one. (Freak!) This summer he posted a video of himself eating a hot dog (which he claims is his favorite meat) with pickles, onions, and ketchup. (Gross!) And now we find out he's been secretly using the name Pierre Delecto.

What makes all of this so weird is that many of us asked why, at the age of 70 and with all the money in the world, did Romney even want to get back into public life anyway? His answer was in part that he wanted to bring some statesmanship and dignity to Washington. Who knew such gravitas came with a burner account and a French fake name? And to think that John Barron almost named Pierre as his Secretary of State! (Recall that famous dinner Trump and Romney had late in 2016; Romney ordered the frog's legs appetizer -- or was it "Pierre" that ordered them?) Well, if nothing else Mitt's given himself an easy campaign slogan should he decide to run for reelection in 2024: Re-electo Delecto.
