Drain Company Owner Sentenced In Trench Collapse Case

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A former drain company owner, convicted of manslaughter after two workers were killed in a trench collapse in 2016, was sentenced Thursday morning.

Kevin Otto, of Blackstone, was sentenced to two years in prison for each of the two counts of involuntary manslaughter. Those sentences will run concurrently. He also received three years probation for witness intimidation following the prison sentence.

Otto is the former owner of Atlantic Drain Service. In 2016, two of his workers — Kelvin Mattocks and Robert Higgins — drowned while excavating a trench in the South End and a fire hydrant collapsed.

Otto was found guilty of manslaughter for not taking cave-in precautions and lying about the training the two workers had received.

Prosecutors had originally has for 7-10 years.

The judge stayed the sentence so a motion to reconsider can be filed before the end of the month.
