VB's Column: What time is it?

I'm a talk radio guy, so I love hot takes. And these days hot takes are around every corner: "Brady's gone man, he's going to Tennessee because he hates Belichick." "China created the Coronavirus in a lab and lost control of it." "Donuts and fried chicken go together quite nicely actually." (Ok, that last take was mine, thank you KFC.) But there's one hot take that popped up this week that I can't understand: Daylight Saving Time has got to go.

Here was Marco Rubio, the Senator from Florida, on Twitter last Saturday: Tonight the federal government will force us to move the clock forward one hour. There is no legitimate reason to keep doing this. It's time to lock the clock.

Andrew Yang, former candidate for President: The fall back, spring ahead loss of an hour causes sleep deprivation and even injury. Let's just pick a time and stick to it.

And finally, Jedidiah Bila, weekend anchor of Fox and Friends: Someone needs to get rid of this Daylight Saving Time nonsense because its infuriating. Leave the clocks alone, not a sane human on Earth enjoys this.

"The government is forcing us to move the clock", Daylight Saving causes "injury", "it's infuriating!" I hate to quote Sergeant Hulka from the movie Stripes, but LIGHTEN UP, FRANCIS. Nobody gets hurt because of Daylight Saving Time, and if you think losing one hour of sleep in the spring causes "sleep deprivation", you need to get a hold of yourself.

As to Rubio's charge, "There is no legitimate reason to keep doing this," and Bila's lament, "not a sane human on Earth enjoys this," allow me to set the record (and the time) straight. First, there is nothing better than Fall Back. That extra hour is like a gift from God, and I value it even more than I value a KFC donut chicken sandwich. Second, the extra hour of daylight at night we are now getting because of Spring Ahead is also nice, and it makes up for that one hour loss on ONE NIGHT. By the way, if sleep deprivation is a concern, Spring Ahead comes every year, it's not too hard to prepare for Andrew Yang, so relax. Which leads to my third point. If we did away with Daylight Saving Time, would I be crushed? Of course not. I'm not that worked up about it one way or the other. But you know what I would miss almost as much as I would miss Fall Back? I'd miss all the politicians and commentators whining about what a hardship and danger it is to move the clock an hour. Oh the humanity! I know its hard Marco, Andrew, and Jedidiah, but try to keep it together. After all, we are a mere 236 days away from righting this "wrong", because on November 1st we will indeed Fall Back. The (reset) clock is ticking, and I for one can't wait.
