BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Sarah Greenwood School was filled with celebrating students on Monday for Boston Public Schools' Red Sox Hat Day.
Students flooded into the gymnasium as Mayor Michelle Wu spoke about the high-energy event.
“We’re here today on one of my favorite days all year, which is BPS Red Sox hat day,” said Mayor Wu. “This hat represents what it means to be part of our community.”
More than 40,000 custom white-and-green Red Sox hats were given to BPS students and staff with the help of a donation from JetBlue. The giveaway began back in 2017 with the airline.
“For us, it’s not only a Red Sox ‘B,’ it really represents the heart of all of Boston,” said Mayor Wu. “You are the only people anywhere to have this exact kind of Red Sox hat.”
The surprises didn’t stop with the hats. Red Sox President and CEO Sam Kennedy announced that the students and staff would also get 2 tickets each to Red Sox games at Fenway Park this season. The reaction had Red Sox Manager and former player Alex Cora taken aback.
“Your reaction made my day. You know why? Because we go there every single day, and sometimes it’s like ‘oh yeah, it’s Fenway Park,’” said Cora. “For you guys, the teachers and the students, your reaction to those tickets was amazing.”
