BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston city leaders outlined public safety preparations for the 130th Boston Marathon on Friday, ahead of a busy weekend and the race on Monday.

Several state and city leaders, including Mayor Michelle Wu and Police Commissioner Michael Cox, reminded residents and spectators to stay vigilant and aware of their surroundings on Marathon Monday.

“We will have public safety personal visible and positioned wherever needed to ensure that we have eyes on the entire race route and supports available for our communities,” Mayor Wu said.

Local police have also partnered up with state and federal authorities to ensure every aspect of public safety is covered during the event.

Street closures and parking restrictions

Major streets along the race route will be closed early on Marathon Monday, with some closures starting Sunday evening.

The Boston Athletic Association said streets in the downtown area will be closed off from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday.

Several parking restrictions in towns along the route will also be in place.

“Please do not drive in the area on Marathon Monday, take public transportation if you can,” Cox added.

MBTA

All MBTA lines will run on normal operating schedule during the big event.

Several Green Line stations will be closed to accommodate the race. Copley Station will be shut down all day. South Street station on the B Branch and Kent Street and St. Mary’s Street on the C Branch will be closed starting at 10 a.m.

Meanwhile, Cox added that Monday is also a Red Sox home game, where authorities expect an additional 30,000 people in the Kenmore Square area.

“The biggest impact on the game and Marathon Monday will be typically around 2 o’clock when the game lets out and the crowd comes towards the finish line,” Cox said.

Nearly 30,000 runners are set to start the 26.2-mile race in Hopkinton and cross the finish line at Copley Square.
