BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Crews have filled many snow farms across the city of Boston in the wake of this week's blizzard.

Mystic Paving, based in Medford, has been working on melting much of the snow at a parking lot off UMass Boston's campus in Dorchester.

Hundreds of trucks dump snow from all over the city overnight and during the day they melt it down with a Trecan Combustion snow melter.

The workers said it's a repetitive but effective process to melt all of the snow. "We load it, it goes out and comes right into the drain," one said.

Another worker said the machine "goes through 200 gallons an hour."

Two-hundred gallons sounds like a lot, but when the parking lot has mountains of snow, it still takes a long time.

"[We are] watching it go away, slowly but surely, got a long way to go," one said.

"It's an expensive machine and you just got to sit and watch it the whole time," said another.

They said the snow melter machine is stationed there for now, but it's mobile, and they can bring it to any site for melting.
