BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – It's the annual celebration of spring at the historic Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, as the hanging nasturtiums display returns to the courtyard.

Museum spokesperson Cassandra Martinez said it's an annual tradition started by Isabella Stewart Gardner herself.

"The hanging nasturtiums are this beloved tradition," she said. "We consider them the heralds of spring. It's something that was started by our founder, Isabel Stewart Gardner, herself in the early 1900s, and it has been done annually with very few exceptions for over a century."

Martinez added that the museum is routinely sold out during this time of year, as visitors pack the courtyard to catch a glimpse of the hanging flowers draped from the third-floor balconies.

"There are these gorgeous cascading vines of bright orange flowers that hang from the windows of third-floor balconies, and you can just see people's faces light up when they enter the space," she explained.

The museum's hanging nasturtiums are only on display until April 13th.
