'It Was Totally Empty:' T Riders Describe Commute During Coronavirus

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Park Street Station is usually hustling and bustling during the morning rush hour—but with many working from home amid the spread of coronavirus, that wasn't the case Monday morning.

WBZ NewsRadio's James Rojas spoke to several riders about their commute. They said there were far fewer people on the MBTA. Some said it seemed more like a weekend on the T; one described the scene as "strange."

"I rode in from the Brookline area, usually there's people standing up and lines of people trying to get a seat, and it was pretty much empty," said one rider.

"It was totally empty," said another. "Like, completely, completely empty. There was probably like ten people in my car, when it's normally like sardines packed into a can."

Some said they would begin working from home this week—but for others, that wasn't an option. They said they hoped the T would not shut down.

"I'm hoping it doesn't these next couple of days, because then I would be a little screwed for public transportation," said Laura Best of Allston.

Those who were riding the T told Rojas they were being careful, keeping their hands in their pockets and using lots of hand sanitizer.

"I got my hands in my pockets like this the whole time," said Barry Quinn of Brookline. "That's my only way to get to work, so I don't have a whole lot of options. It's definitely a different environment."
