WOBURN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Dave and Buster's in Woburn was filled with some arm-wrestling pros for a fundraiser for young adults in need.
Joshua Grant is a three-time world champion arm wrestler with a knack for helping young adults in need. When Grant isn’t slamming hands to the table, he is working his day job at The Home for Little Wanderers.
The Home for Little Wanderers is an organization working with at-risk kids, young adults, and families. Grant works specifically with young adults aged 18-26 leaving state care. He said this age group is usually forgotten since they are considered legal adults.
“The idea that we would turn our backs on them the moment they chronologically turn an adult is obviously ridiculous,” said Grant. “Most of us, if someone took away our financial wherewithal and family support, we would flounder too. So these young people, they just need what we have.”
Grant is helping raise money for the organization by running in the Boston Marathon. To fundraise for that, he gathered some teammates from the Boston professional arm-wrestling team, ‘Arsenal of Arms,’ and other local groups for some friendly competition.
He added that it is important for all kids growing up to get the same support.
“We decided our own path [growing up], what we wanted to do, the things of our dreams and aspirations,” said Grant. “Our objective is to give these young people the same opportunities that those of us who are lucky enough to have families had.”
When asked if he could carry anything from arm-wrestling over to marathon running, there was one thing Grant had in mind.
“Arm wrestling hurts all the time. Your arms always hurt, your elbows always hurt, your fingers always hurt,” said Grant. “When you're running, especially this many miles, and you’re a regular person like myself, everything hurts.”
