DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Norfolk County Sheriff's Office is warning the public about a scam making the rounds.
Sheriff Patrick McDermott said scammers are calling people over the phone claiming to be from the sheriff's office, and that they owe money for outstanding 'PPP Loans.'
The callers claim the 'loans' are past due, and the people receiving the calls must pay a 'surety bond' because they missed a court hearing.
The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) ended in May 2021.
It was a Small Business Administration federal loan program to help businesses during the COVID pandemic.
These scammers are also sending fraudulent documents that look official to support the scams.
McDermott said his office never makes calls like these, nor does any other local police department.
He also said to report suspicious calls to the local police department.
