BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Boston Red Sox won their second game of the season, defeating the San Diego Padres 5-2 in their home opener at Fenway Park. The win improves the Sox's record to 2-5.
Marcelo Mayer led the team’s offensive efforts with two hits, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Willson Contreras also hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, which proved to be the winning run.
Ceddanne Rafaela and Caleb Durbin each contributed an RBI with singles in the third and fourth innings, respectively.
Starting pitcher Sonny Gray picked up the win with a six-inning performance, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out three.
Aroldis Chapman finished the game for the save, moving into 11th place all-time in career saves in MLB history.
The Sox return to action Saturday afternoon against the San Diego Padres. Connelly Early is expected to take the mound for Boston.
