Kuhner's Corner: The War on Halloween

Left wants to destroy another tradition

By: Jeffrey T. Kuhner

Halloween is under attack. The PC left has set its sights on taking all of the fun out of trick-or-treating.

Dozens of cities and towns in Massachusetts and New Hampshire have decided to postpone the celebration until Saturday. The reason—I kid you not: Because it’s expected to rain and be breezy. Even though the temperature is supposed to be a balmy 69 degrees, city officials are afraid that rain could make the streets too slippery, and thereby too dangerous, for little kids to be outside. Many parents (and children) are disappointed and angry. And they are right.

First, as someone who takes my two kids trick-or-treating, children should not be walking in the middle of the street—regardless of whether it’s raining or not. They should be on the sidewalk as they go door-to-door hunting for candy. Hence, they won’t be hit by a car. This is simple common-sense and basic parenting.

Moreover, there is something pathetic about a culture that so coddles children it prevents them from enjoying Halloween due to rain. When I was young, growing up in Montreal, Canada, I remember many Halloweens where it not only rained, but was freezing cold. My mother had me put on a sweater and a rain coat—problem solved. No one ever thought to postpone the celebration. In fact, if someone dared to suggest such a thing, he would be laughed at.

No longer. Children are now raised to be fragile snowflakes, where everything is supposed to offend or harm them. Even rain is a danger. Think of the lesson kids are being taught: Whenever they encounter some kind of adversity, such as rain showers on Halloween night, instead of confronting—and overcoming—it they should insist it be delayed. What will happen when they grow up? Will they demand they not come to work because of heavy rainfall? Will they ask the military to postpone an invasion or battle because of rain? I could go on but you get the point—life is about adapting to difficult, unforeseen (and uncontrollable) circumstances. All we are doing is crippling the ability of our kids to be self-reliant and perseverant. They are being coddled into becoming spoiled, pampered and entitled narcissists, who think the world should revolve around them. (Hint: It doesn’t).

Hence, it is no surprise that a majority of American university students say they support “punishing” others for wearing “offensive” Halloween costumes. A recent poll by The College Pulse found that 51 percent of university students claim that wearing offensive costumes is not protected freedom of expression under the First Amendment, but should be punished—including going to jail. For campus liberals, wearing a Native American Indian costume or a sombrero at a Halloween party is grounds for imprisonment. This is not only insane, but totalitarian. Communist and fascist regimes threw people in prison for speech or actions they deemed impermissible. This is now the majority view in U.S. colleges.

Culture trumps politics; it is cultural forces that ultimately influences and shapes a country’s political system. The left understands this seminal truth in a way that conservatives have never grasped. Indoctrinate the youth and the future is yours. This is why liberals have waged a cultural war since the 1960s.

Our constitutional republic was made for a brave, self-sufficient and independent people—citizens, not subjects, who will jealously defend their hard-won liberties and freedoms. A society that cannot even allow kids to go out in the rain to collect free candy on what is supposed to be one of the happiest days of the year is not fit for self-government. It is nurturing a servile, weak generation that is to be kept in perpetual childish dependence under government control.

No wonder over 70 percent of Millennials support state socialism, while 36 percent favor authoritarian communism. They have no idea what they have. And sadly, they have no idea what they have lost—their dignity, pride, self-worth and most importantly, birthright.
