Native American activists call for legislation to ban Indian mascots

Native American activists call for legislation to ban Indian mascots.

The North American Indian Center of Boston, the United American Indians of New England and other groups held a protest at the Massachusetts State House.

The group called for public schools in the state to ban the use of Native American mascots as well as calling for change to the state flag.

The state seal currently has a colonist’s arm holding a sword above an image of a Native American.

State Sen. Joanne Comerford called the state flag and the use of Native American mascots demeaning.
